Giuliana Prucca, independent curator, researcher, and writer, as well as founder and art director of AVARIE, is delighted to participate in the international photography symposium NIDA. Meeting Photography in Nida, Lithuania.
She will lead the workshop Displacements: From Time-Image to Book-Space, taking place from Monday 14 to Wednesday 16, and will give a lecture entitled Independent Publishing as an Artistic and Curatorial Practice on Friday 17, 2026, at 12 pm.
Displacements: From Time-Image to Book-Space is a thinking lab on artists’ book design and publishing as an interdisciplinary practice. Three intensive days of open discussion on translating time and movement into visual space through the dynamic montage of mixed media. Beginning with significant and unconventional examples from the history of the artist’s book, and drawing on photography, cinema, performance, and writing, Giuliana Prucca will examine the status of images, the role of the archive, and the potential of editing processes to deconstruct narratives and challenge representation. The workshop welcomes artists, photographers, filmmakers, and image-makers of all levels, as well as anyone interested in books as active platforms for experimentation, dissemination, and the circulation of artworks. Participants are invited to bring their own work – prints, digital files, ideas, notes, and visual or literary references – to be developed through group layout sketches and a collective review, fostering collaborative dialogue.
The lecture reflects on independent publishing as an artistic and curatorial practice. Drawing on her experience, Giuliana Prucca will discuss the book as an autonomous medium for generating new forms of knowledge and for rethinking the relationship between images, archives, time, and space. Through selected projects and a visual dialogue between film and book excerpts, the talk will offer insight into publishing as a critical tool capable of transforming and expanding the possibilities of an original work.
NIDA. Meeting Photography is one of Lithuania’s longest-running professional photography events, first established in 1973. For over five decades, the symposium has brought together artists, photographers, curators, researchers, and audiences from Lithuania and abroad to exchange ideas, create, and engage with the local community, establishing Nida as an important meeting point for photography and contemporary culture in the Baltic region and beyond.
The programme includes lectures, workshops, artist talks, exhibitions, nighttime projections in public spaces, and informal gatherings with invited guests. Today, the symposium continues to foster new perspectives on photography, approaching the medium within the broader context of contemporary art and encouraging diverse forms of cultural and educational dialogue.
