KAMERA CAHIER N° 4

Maria Iorio | Raphaël Cuomo

A special edition issue curated, designed and published by AVARIE, Paris and Labor Neunzehn, Berlin. It accompanies KAMERA SERIES, while it is an independent and valuable object to collect.

The central idea that informs and directs the booklets’ montage is the interplay between the concepts of addition and subtraction. This is achieved by unveiling a missing image in the screening or an unreleased second from an artist's film, expanded to 24 pages. Additionally, each booklet contains a piece directly removed from the show.

The editing establishes a dialogue between film frames and performed writings derived from texts, scripts, storyboards, and notes. The KAMERA exhibition is consequently extended into a physical space—the book—allowing for its widespread dissemination, complementing and contrasting with its potential online occurrence.

KAMERA SERIES is a screening program of experimental films, video art works and printed matter taking place in a former GDR building in Berlin.

Each event showcases a retrospective of selected films by an artist and a small exhibition of his/her publications or works on paper over a span of 4 days.

KAMERA centers on fostering a critical dialogue between different film formats and artists’ books. Through its regular occurrence, it aspires to create a space for community exchanges about contemporary image-making.

KAMERA is a series conceived and curated by Labor Neunzehn and AVARIE.

MARIA IORIO | RAPHAËL CUOMO are an artist duo based in Geneva and Berlin. Investigating the conditions under which dominant historical narratives are produced and can be challenged, their hybrid cinematic forms manifest unheard voices, disregarding collective experiences, resistant subjectivities. New knowledges come to light, shared through a performative archival practice, translation processes and the aesthetical and political dimensions of listening.

Their work has been internationally presented in various exhibitions and film festivals, including SAVVY Contemporary, Berlin; Istituto Svizzero, Palermo; Documenta 14, Athens; Quadriennale 16, Rome; Querini Stampalia, Venice; Argos, Brussels; 54th Venice Biennale; Arsenal, Berlin; FID Marseille; Visions du réel, where their last film was awarded the Special Jury Award in 2021.

For KAMERA N° 4 the artists have presented Undead voices, an ongoing video installation - including collected historical documents and a banner - whose starting point is a Super 8mm amateur film, Donne emergete!, made in 1975 by filmmaker Isabella Bruno.
Recently rediscovered, the film is, according to archival criteria, damaged beyond repair. Reviewing its devastated chemical emulsions, 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗩𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 exposes the effects of the marginalisation of “minor cinemas”, the dissemination and destruction of the material culture related to the movements of contestation in Italy in the 1970s. It nevertheless manages to retrieve some ghostly sequences documenting feminist demonstrations and assemblies, gestures of resistance and love, as well as the several songs that constituted the original soundtrack of Donne emergete!
